Your employees are one of your biggest assets, you have spent huge amount of money and time in training and developing that individual, naturally, you’d want to retain them. In addition, studies have shown that happy people are productive people. The question is, how can you retain your employees and at the same time, ensure that they are happy and productive?
The answer? Appreciation.
People don’t leave when the job is tough. People leave when they don’t feel seen, heard and appreciated.
But, how do you show appreciation to your employees? One of the more tangible way of doing so is through gift-giving. Gift-giving help you to show appreciation to your staff and this in return, fuels a higher degree of employee loyalty which benefits both the company and the employee.
Appreciating your employees can help to create a healthy workplace and retain talent and at the same time, attract new talent as your company will stand out as one of the best places to work at where employees feel valued.
A challenge for the HR
It’s challenging enough for organizations to creatively show their employees their appreciation throughout the year. But throw holiday season into the mix and it’s a whole new challenge. On top of that, Malaysia has at least three huge festivals (Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali) that the organization’s HR need to prepare for, and this is on top of their usual job scope, duties and responsibilities.
The worst part of it is that it takes countless of hours to find and send these gifts, and you never really know if it is something that your employees want because gift-giving can be tricky.
Based on our gifting experience, here are some of the gift-giving tips we’d like to give:
1. Personalized gifts are the way to go. From our experience, a personalized gift or even a personalized note of recognition from the superior goes a long way in showing gratitude for the team member’s hard work.
2. The most appreciated gifts need not be the most expensive. Knowing your recipients and getting them something you know they’d love, or need will be more appreciated. Otherwise, these gifts are just either going to be thrown out or regifted.
